Home batteries

Pair a home battery with new solar panels, or add one to the solar system you already have. Explore storage to suit your electricity use and backup needs.

Why consider this upgrade?

  • Use more of your own solar electricity by storing daytime surplus for the evening.
  • Make more use of an existing solar system when your household is away during the day.
  • Reduce purchases during expensive electricity periods when your battery settings and tariff support this.
  • Explore backup for essential appliances with a system specifically designed and installed for it.
  • Consider a virtual power plant that may offer credits for sharing stored energy with the grid.

What needs checking?

  • Solar generation, electricity use and tariffs.
  • Existing inverter compatibility and battery location.
  • Backup circuits, power requirements and installation scope.
Sizing, compatibility, location and costs need assessment. Backup is not automatic with every battery.

Compare what matters

You can discuss specific brands and models once the requirements for your home are understood.

ConsiderationWhat to discuss
Usable capacity (kWh)How much energy the battery can store for use.
Power output (kW)How much equipment the system can power at once.
Backup capabilityWhich circuits are supported and what extra equipment is required.
Warranties and installed costCompare limitations, support and the whole installation scope.

How it fits your home

Pair a battery with new or existing solar

A home battery stores surplus solar for later. You can install it with new solar panels or add it to an existing system. Consider solar generation and the hours when your household uses electricity together.

  • If you already have solar, check its output and inverter compatibility before adding a battery. For a new system, plan the panels, inverter and battery together.
  • If the solar system is around ten years old or older, compare keeping it with replacing or expanding it. Age is a prompt for a condition and performance review, not an automatic reason to replace working equipment.
  • Plan for additional electric appliances so the battery and solar system work together as your household’s needs change.
Capacity, backup and everyday value
  • A 15 kWh battery is one example of storage capacity. Your usable capacity should reflect surplus generation, evening demand and any backup reserve; a larger battery is not automatically better value.
  • Check usable storage, power output, charging limits and monitoring. Backup needs suitable equipment and wiring, and may cover selected circuits rather than the whole home.
  • Compare the electricity you avoid buying with the export payments you give up. Include tariff differences, charging losses, battery ageing and any future replacement when assessing savings and payback.
  • A virtual power plant may provide additional credits. Compare access to your stored energy, backup reserve, contract terms and warranty conditions before joining.
Rebates and BooST support
  • The Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program can reduce the installation cost of an eligible battery connected to new or existing rooftop solar. Ask your installer to identify the discount already included in the quote and confirm current eligibility.

Up to $2,000 in BooST support per eligible household. This is applied to remaining eligible costs excluding GST, after other government rebates and subsidies. GST and any mandatory scheme co-payment remain payable by the resident. It is a household total, not an amount for each upgrade. Any unused amount is forfeited. Confirm BooST eligibility with the team, and ask your provider to check other scheme requirements and any minimum customer contribution.

Products and brands

HP Energy provides three product quotes to help you compare suitable options. The team will check the work required and installer availability. Choose “I know what I want” in the questionnaire to record a preferred brand or model; availability, suitability and subsidy eligibility will be checked for your circumstances.
